When the hour came

We salute
The heroes of the hour
When the hour came
They stood, they walked, they ran
In the front lines
Of everyday ordinary
They did as they had done

The providers of care
The deliveries of hope
The distractions from normal
The volunteers and the workers
The talking befrienders
In our toughest time
The greatest strength
Emerged through the kindest hearts

The everyday ordinary
Of the collective locals
Carried by courage
Providers of support
In every little or big way
Whether your names have been spoken
Or whether they've not
We salute you

And even after this ordinary
Becomes ordinary again
We shall continue to salute you
For we shall remember
In pictures and words
You are a chapter of history
So shall the salute last beyond
This moment, this year
As we
salute
you.
