I Belong

An assembly of outsiders
Flags hoisted to the sky
Their faces coloured in hate
Their words embroiled with lies
Standing on the steps of my town
Pronouncing me to be foreign
Saying I don’t belong
In chants vile and abhorrent

The megaphone narrative
Of click-bait hate
Using pick and mix politics
To evilize my faith
Planting Islamophobia
Nurturing it to grow
The malicious ideals of hatred
On the steps and headlines flow

I witness again as before
On the cloth of blue, red and white
Scrawls of hate scribbled over
Of race of faith of colour - to incite
Reactions out of frustration
Because the hate is the same
And why are the cries not declared
For the cloth to be reclaimed

But I stand as before and again
My existence with defiant vigour
A prey they may make me
I am not the villain they desire
I refuse to be the victim
To fall into sympathies song
I am the who I am
And this is where I belong

I am the child of this soil
Of this tarmac and paving
I am a breath in this air
A history in the making
I am footsteps leaving imprints
Through ages on these paths
I am the voice evoking
The echoing of laughs

I am the conqueror of ambition
A searcher of greatness
I am the being of human
A helper to the restless
I am the average of everyday
Another life in the town
Whether I am seen or not
I am always around

I am far from the hate
They paint in their narratives
Look beyond sympathy and blame
And you shall see this
I am every identity I hold
My faith will remain strong
I am the who I am
And this is where I belong.
