Long forgotten is the celebration last year When we walked and greeted with a freedom ignored Such are these gifts more precious than gold As we embrace this time, a different Eid Since childhood, our memories have stacked and piled Clothing with tags in a bag on the floor Preparations of platters of treats to share Children on errands at neighbour’s doors Morning welcomes the first daytime snack A month since daylight had observed us eat The rushing of brushing and dressing in rush Heading to the Eid prayer, reciting takbir Returning home after partaking of greetings The festivities have begun in homes, in streets Children eager, spending their gifted coins Echoes in the terraced tunnel of a different Eid This time we celebrate in unfamiliar ways An alternative prayer will suffice at home Virtual, the word through devices smart The clothes and food enjoyed alone Yet think not of that lost to the wind Gratitude be shared for that which we hold With patience and care and kindness bear Recall the month that hath passed not old Delve in thought of ourselves not others Ask what difference has been made to me Of the change that I can embrace from here To be that whom I should always have been For in the value of these lessons of life Lay the secrets of our dreams and our fears To be better than that which before we were Take time to realise as we embrace this year A different Eid.
A different Eid
